This is a great book. Apparently it was a movie with Patty Duke! It was pretty cool. The premise is there's this ugly Jewish girl who needs a nose job. She can't get a date and her parents are trying to set her up with guys, so she leaves home in Brooklyn and gets a room in the Village. Here she finds acceptance among all the kooky queers and artists. It is a true timepiece. 1969, the year of the Stonewall riots. And her acceptance of gays is unquestioning. And drugs and stripping and birth control and gangs are just a part of life too. My kinda book. Unfortunately she turns out to be straight and sleeps with an artist, when it's obvious the real story should be she goes to the Village to discover herself as a lesbian. But it was a movie with Patty Duke, so they couldn't do that. It has to be squeaky clean in its warped, 1969 kinda way.
I found it a bit difficult to get through...also found myself wondering how accurate/true it was, considering its novelistic qualities.
