Gaiman explores the waning significance that myth has in our current culture by adding to it a myth of his own in American Gods. He explores the tendency of cultures--especially Americans--to leave behind what they have "conjured up." I found the notion of fairweather worshippers and the aftermath the leave behind to be thought-provoking. American Gods is a highly creative and thoughtful book. Though at times the pace was slower than I'd like, the premise and the characters were intriguing enough for me to enjoy. This unique book follows it's main character, Shadow, through a crash course in gods that American immigrants have left behind. It begins with a strange dream and a chance encounter with a mysterious man. From there the plot weaves an intricate pattern as Shadow meets varying gods, left behind by their people or on the rise through modern technology. Shadow travels all over the country and through mysterious lands. He is tested as a mythical archetype several times, but I don't want to give away too much. Gaiman's writing style is easy to read though not literary. I found the subject matter made up for any lack of prose, however. His imagination mixed with the themes in the book made it worthwhile. I must say, however, that this book is not for everyone. As I stated earlier, the pace is a bit slow and unless you find the characters and subject of the book interesting, you probably won't enjoy reading it. However, if you like a deeply creative story that blends myths with reality, this may be the book for you.

Görünüşe göre Evelyn her şeyde daha iyi; yarış, aptallık, sanat, dekorasyon. Ancak yazım ve karate söz konusu olduğunda ve birisinin bir arkadaşa ihtiyacı olduğunda orada olmak, Evelyn en iyi olmayabilir.
