Polygamy and child abuse in the First Latter Day Saints church sects are issues that I consider to be very important not just in general to me personally. I am very passionate about it. In freshmen year speech class, we all had to give an informative speech on an issue we were passionate about, and while other girls picked bullying and nutrition, I picked polygamy. Half the girls in my class didn't know what that meant, and the other half knew what it was but knew nothing about the issue. To me, it's such a scary issue because in another place, it means a girl my age can be married off to a man three times her age. It means that children stop going to school in the eighth grade, and that sometimes the very adults who should be taking care of them. Contrary to popular belief, freedom of religion does not mean child abuse and polygamy are okay. We need to do something about this, our government needs to do something about this, and I believe that the first step to a solution is to be informed, whether it be through fiction or nonfiction. Of these books, Keep Sweet is a pretty good selection. Alva Jane thinks she will be able to have it all: a life with her crush, an education, and her faith. Of course, she couldn't. That didn't shock me. What shocked me were the graphic description of what really happens to the people in her community. A wife is beaten savagely in full view of the community for attempting to run away by her own husband. That same husbands roughly forces himself upon his new wife, raping her even she pleads with him to stop. I had to put Keep Sweet down several times because I got so upset. This was a hard read for me, but I kept going because I had to know if Alva Jane would have a happy ending. I guess she did, and she didn't. I did think it ended too suddenly, but I can see the point. Overall, Keep Sweet does not cover new territory, but it does cover it well. Definitely recommended!
