I wanted to read this book mainly because it dealt with a subject that I was obsessed with many years ago, volcanoes. I was especially interested in Pompeii, so I figured this book would be a nice trip back into the days of my volcanoe obsession. It's part of the reason this book only got a B, because the main focus of most stories about Pompeii (the explosion) doesn't happen until the last few chapters of the book. But I suppose it's why the book is called Pompeii and not Vesuvius. The book was a pretty entertaning read, though the characters aren't very well developed and they're very hard to keep track of. I was also annoyed with the seperate plot lines of politics because they didn't really seem to push the main story arch along too much. I also wasn't too pleased with the focus on a mini-romance between Attilius and Corelia, it seemed to be a forced romance and not necessary to the plot. I'm almost wondering if Harris was told to add a little romance in their and really didn't want to do it. As for Harris' writing, it's fantastic, it has a little bit of a modern flair to it, but not so much you're not taken to ancient Rome, just enough to allow you to understand the story. If you're into historical fiction, especially about Ancient Rome, go for Pompeii, if you're not, I would avoid this book. Overall? Good read.
