I finished this in Seattle summer 1994. I should read it again. I have never read a Hemingway short story or novel that I did not like.

I really enjoyed this book even though I haven't read most of the books she was talking about - but that didn't matter. I learned so much about the Iranian woman's perspective on life in Iran. The author -Azar Nafisi must be about my age and she went to college in the US so our lives would have been somewhat similar at that point. And then she returned to Iran and life changed dramatically for her along with all women. She had not covered her head when she was younger and now she was being forced to. Her Grandmother made a good point in that she herself covered her head because of her Muslim faith - it was her choice to do that but when all women are forced to do it, it's no longer a matter of faith. It's a law. And even if a woman covered her head so that no skin showed - she might be searched to prove that she wasn't wearing nail polish or something thought of as immoral - even if it was totally covered. Very sad. The women written about in this book make various choices of how to live in that world - or how to leave it. So it's much more about their lives and how these books gave them things to think about, talk about and for some changed their lives.
